Gynecomastia surgery is a popular and effective solution for men dealing with excess breast tissue. Men with gynecomastia tissue often have large nipple areolar complexes and prominent nipples and often ask, “Will I need a nipple or areola reduction and gynecomastia surgery?”
Let’s define gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of male breast glandular tissue. It’s actual breast tissue, typically caused by a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. This distinction is critical because it determines how we treat the condition.
Many people confuse gynecomastia with pseudogynecomastia, which is an accumulation of fat in the chest area due to obesity. Pseudogynecomastia can improve with weight loss and strength training. However, true gynecomastia involves glandular tissue that won’t respond to diet or exercise in the same way.
Let’s say you start doing bench presses, pushups, or chest flys to “burn off” gynecomastia. While these exercises will strengthen the pectoral muscles and may improve the shape and tone of your chest, they won’t eliminate the glandular tissue sitting on top of those muscles.
Here’s why:
Some men find that as they build muscle under the gynecomastia or lose fat surrounding the area, the gynecomastia tissue appears even more prominent, not less. This can be frustrating and emotionally distressing, especially if they’ve been working hard at the gym.
The treatment of gynecomastia depends on the cause and severity:
If you’re dealing with what you believe to be gynecomastia, don’t waste your energy chasing results that chest workouts alone won’t provide. Exercise is still incredibly important for your overall health and body composition, but it’s not a fix for glandular breast tissue. The most effective first step is to consult a healthcare provider who can help determine whether you have gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia and guide you toward an appropriate treatment plan.
You don’t have to live with the physical or emotional discomfort that can come with this condition, but it’s important to take the right approach, informed by science and medical expertise.
