Revision Rhinoplasty

We care about your results, and that starts with preparing for your surgery. We will provide you with some detailed instructions to follow to prevent unnecessary complications. Some of these directions will include:

• Eat healthily: What you put in your body can affect your surgery, even in the slightest way. Make sure you eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and look for lean proteins.

• Avoid smoking: If you can, try to avoid smoking at least six weeks prior to surgery.
• Prepare your home: Make sure you have enough entertainment to last during your recovery, so add those movies and shows to your streaming list, find a good book or two, and prep your meals so you won’t have to focus on those things during recovery.

Revision rhinoplasty is a highly complex procedure that requires both a specialist surgeon and an anesthesiologist. While patients will not feel pain during the procedure, they will likely experience bleeding, bruising, and swelling afterward. These symptoms can be managed and will eventually reduce over time.

Revision rhinoplasty requires at least one to two follow-up appointments after the surgery to monitor the nose’s healing progression and ensure no further complications have developed. The exact number of appointments can be determined during the consultation and will depend on the patient’s initial condition and the necessity of further follow-up appointments.

Before evaluating your results, please wait until your nose stops bleeding or swelling is reduced. This process may take up to two to three weeks, though every patient’s recovery will be different. The nose should have fully healed and settled into its new shape by one year following the surgery.

You will need to come in for your first post-op check-up before considering any traveling, but even then, most patients should expect to be able to resume their travel plans between one and three weeks. We recommend fully recovering before making any decisions, but if you have concerns about your ability to travel, please discuss them with your surgeon during the consultation.

Depending on the extent of your surgery and the techniques used by your surgeon, you may have visible scarring, or it could be hidden within your nostrils. If you do have any external incisions, they are typically made underneath the curvature of your nose. These scars can appear red or whitish and raised or thickened. Over time, this scarring will fade but may still be slightly visible even after enough healing time has passed.

Your recovery will vary depending on the details of your surgery, but patients can typically expect to take one to two weeks off from work or school after their revision rhinoplasty.

You should relax and recover for the first two weeks after surgery. After this time, you will be permitted to do some light walking to prevent blood clotting, but any strenuous activities should be avoided. Exercising too soon can cause pain and irritation in your nose and face. You should also avoid activities that increase blood pressure in your head, such as heavy lifting, jogging, or holding your breath, which can cause bleeding or injury to your nose.

Our patients may prefer to minimize their recovery time by combining their revision rhinoplasty with other cosmetic procedures, such as chin implants or buccal fat removal. In your consultation, please inform your board-certified plastic surgeon about all your desired aesthetic improvements so they may advise you on the appropriate procedures that can be safely incorporated into your surgical plan.

When performed correctly, a revision rhinoplasty will hopefully be the last rhinoplasty you receive. However, no surgery is without its risks. Patients undergoing a revision rhinoplasty should be mindful of the following potential complications:

• Soft tissue or cartilage death
• Bleeding
• Swelling
• Infection
• Asymmetrical shape
• Reduced or impacted breathing
• Altered sense of smell
