Gynecomastia treatment can be simple: find an expert close to home, schedule your consultation, and undergo surgery with minimal hassle. Unfortunately, gynecomastia experts are few and far between. While many plastic surgeons offer the procedure, only a select few have extensive, specialized experience in treating gynecomastia.
If you’re serious about achieving your physical goals, travel might be part of the journey. With a bit of planning, traveling for gynecomastia surgery can be smooth, empowering, and absolutely worth it. The overall experiences of our out-of-town patients have been positive and life-changing in many ways.
Start your planning as early as possible. Once you’ve chosen your surgeon and confirmed your surgery date, work backward to book flights, accommodations, and any pre-op consultations.
Pro tip: If you’re flying, discuss with your surgeon about scheduling your return flight 3–7 days post-op. Give yourself time to rest and recover before traveling again.
Look for accommodation that is:
If possible, consider staying in a hotel or Airbnb that allows you to elevate your head and upper body while sleeping (adjustable beds or lots of pillows!).
After gynecomastia surgery, you’ll be sore and wearing compression garments.
Must-pack items:
Arrange Transportation
You won’t be able to drive on the day of surgery. Arrange a friend, family member, or professional medical transportation to get you to and from your surgery, as well as back to your accommodation.
If you’re traveling solo, ask your surgeon’s office if they partner with any post-surgical care services or nurse companions for travelers.
Follow Post-Op Instructions
Your surgeon will give you post-op instructions—this is not the time to “wing it.” Keep your compression binders on and limit your physical activity. Following post operative instructions is the key to a smooth recovery and incredible results.
Avoid lifting luggage, swimming, or drinking alcohol until you’re cleared. Your body needs all its energy to heal.
Recovery isn’t always linear. Swelling, bruising, or fatigue is totally normal. Try to keep your travel plans low-key and allow plenty of downtime.
If you’re tempted to “see the sights” while you’re in a new city—resist! Save that for a follow-up visit or your next vacation. For now, your focus is healing.
Traveling for gynecomastia surgery is more common than you think—and with the right preparation, it can be a smooth, empowering experience. Think of it as an investment in yourself, with a bit of extra planning to make the journey worthwhile. Make sure to ask your Plastic Surgeon anything and everything about your journey. Every question is important. This is your journey, and we are here every step of the way.
